The way the NASDAQ 100 is traded varies by broker, including the symbol used, spreads, and leverage offered. For this guide, I checked what each broker calls the instrument, its trading costs, and the leverage available specifically for the index. I also verified all FSCA claims against the regulator’s official register. Updated September 2026.

About This Review

I chose these NASDAQ brokers based on index trading costs, available leverage, and the FSCA entity holding the account.

5 Quick Questions

Which broker is best for NASDAQ trading in South Africa?

FP Markets quotes the tightest NASDAQ spread at 0.69, but index leverage is 1:100, compared with 1:500 at CFI, XM, VT Markets, and PU Prime.

Can I buy the real NASDAQ 100 index?

No. These brokers offer a CFD tracking the index. You own neither the index nor its constituent shares.

Do all eight brokers on this list have FSCA regulation?

Seven do. Pepperstone has no FSCA license and serves African clients through Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited.

What matters most when comparing NASDAQ CFD costs?

The Forex spread will not inform you about three things: the index spread, the index leverage, and the overnight swap.

When is NASDAQ most active in South African time?

The US session extends from 15:30 to 22:00 in daylight time (SAST) and from 16:30 to 23:00 in standard time.

How We Tested These Brokers for South African Traders

  • South Africa regulation: FSCA entity or intermediary status, and the contracting structure
  • NASDAQ access: the symbol each broker uses and whether the index is offered directly
  • Trading costs: index spread, financing, and currency conversion rather than Forex headline spreads
  • Platform quality: MetaTrader, proprietary platforms, TradingView, automation, and mobile trading
  • Local usability: ZAR accounts, payments, support, and evening trading conditions

Which NASDAQ Setup Is Right for You?

  • I want the lowest cost per trade - FP Markets, at 0.69
  • I want JSE exposure alongside NASDAQ - CFI, the only broker here listing SA40
  • I want a swap that does not change weekly - AvaTrade, flat at 0.0058% daily
  • I want to know the financing cost upfront - Capital.com publishes SOFR plus 0.011%

  • I want raw pricing on the index - VT Markets, NAS100 at 0.90
  • I want commission-free index trading - PU Prime, on Standard and Prime
  • I hold positions for weeks - Pepperstone, the NAS100-F forward carries no swap

What Is NASDAQ 100 Trading? CFD vs Real Ownership

The NASDAQ 100 includes 100 of the biggest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. South African traders can access the index via a CFD, with the symbol varying by provider: NAS100 at Pepperstone and PU Prime; US100 at FP Markets and Capital.com; US100_SPOT at CFI; US100Cash at XM; US_TECH100 at AvaTrade; and NAS100 at VT Markets. With a CFD, one can obtain leveraged price exposure without owning the index or the individual shares that make up the index.

Synthetic Indices Are Not NASDAQ 100

NASDAQ 100 tracks real listed companies. Synthetic and thematic indices are broker-created baskets, so check the contract specification before trading anything labeled simply as a technology index.

Why Trade the NASDAQ 100 Specifically?

The NASDAQ 100 is highly liquid, mainly composed of technology companies, and influenced by expectations around US interest rates, large-cap earnings, and AI developments. Because technology accounts for 68.5% of the index, a single sector drives most of its price movements. So, South African traders can access the NASDAQ 100 after local business hours, but this also exposes their positions to power outages and connectivity disruptions.

Demo Accounts - Test Real NASDAQ Conditions

Check Real-time Spreads

When you are ready to trade live, enter the NASDAQ symbol before making a deposit because the spread you see in real time could be different from the published spread in the demo.

Non-Trading Fees

You should not decide on a broker based solely on the NASDAQ spread, since inactivity fees, withdrawal charges, currency conversion fees, and overnight financing charges can be just as important as the entry spread.

  • FP Markets, Capital.com, and Pepperstone do not charge any fees for inactivity, deposits, or withdrawals
  • CFI charges an inactivity fee after 11 months of dormancy
  • XM charges $10 monthly after 90 days, and on wires under $200
  • AvaTrade charges 50 in the account's base currency every three months, and 100 at twelve
  • VT Markets and PU Prime make the first wire withdrawal each month free, then charge around $20
  • Capital.com adds a 0.7% conversion markup when funding is in a different currency.

Leverage on NASDAQ 100 CFDs

Traders in South Africa are not subject to the retail leverage limits that apply in the EU or Australia, where index CFDs are limited to 20:1.

In South Africa, index leverage ranges from 1:20 with Capital.com to 1:500 with CFI, XM, VT Markets and PU Prime. AvaTrade offers 1:200, Pepperstone offers 1:400, and FP Markets offers 1:100.

With each broker on this list, index leverage is set separately from Forex leverage. So, the leverage ratio on your Forex account doesn't apply to index trading.

Individual Nasdaq-Listed Stock CFDs - Beyond the Index

Some traders looking for a NASDAQ broker want companies like Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, or Amazon rather than the index itself. These are separate instruments, and the terms differ.

While Pepperstone offers share CFDs with 5:1 leverage, compared with 1:400 for the index, FP Markets offers 1:20 leverage rather than 1:100, so the same account ends up with only a small part of the leverage when trading individual shares compared with the index.

Each broker sets share CFDs and their pricing separately from the index.

FSCA Regulation and Tiers

  • FP Markets: FP Markets (Pty) Ltd, FSP 50926
  • CFI: CFI Financial (Pty) Ltd, FSP 53711, providing intermediary services for products offered by CFI International Ltd
  • AvaTrade: Ava Capital Markets (Pty) Ltd, FSP 45984, authorized since November 2015
  • Capital.com: Capital Com South Africa (Pty) Ltd, license number FSP 55488, authorized on 11 December 2025, with approval of the ODP announced in June 2026.
  • XM: XM ZA (Pty) Ltd, FSP 49976, with derivative products supplied by XM Global Limited or XM (SC) Limited
  • VT Markets: VT Markets (Pty) Ltd, FSP 50865, acting as an intermediary to VT Markets Limited
  • PU Prime: PU Prime (Pty) Ltd, FSP 52218, which is neither the issuer nor the market maker
  • Pepperstone: No FSCA authorization; Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited serves African clients under CMA license 128

ZAR Accounts and Currency Conversion

Since the NASDAQ 100 is priced in USD, the costs associated with trading the index and the costs of converting to ZAR are separate. Although a ZAR-based account makes deposits and reporting easier, it does not eliminate the impact of trading a USD-denominated instrument. Both AvaTrade and XM offer ZAR-based accounts through their South African entity, and Capital.com charges a 0.7% markup on conversions when funding in a different currency. Meanwhile, the other five brokers do not publish a conversion rate.

Local Payment Methods

Ozow, PayFast, PayShap, cards, and local bank transfers can help alleviate funding difficulties, but none of the eight brokers listed on the page offer Ozow, PayFast, or PayShap; instead, they accept payments via EFT, bank wire, cards, and e-wallets. XM pays transaction fees for card, e-wallet, and bank wire transactions over $200.

NASDAQ Trading Hours Converted to SAST

NASDAQ standard trading hours are 9:30 am to 4:00 pm US Eastern Time, which is 15:30 to 22:00 SAST when US Eastern Daylight Time is in effect and 16:30 to 23:00 SAST when US Eastern Standard Time is in effect. The conversion differs since South Africa does not observe daylight saving time.

Load-Shedding and NASDAQ Evening Trading

The times when NASDAQ has its most active cash sessions correspond to the afternoon and evening in South Africa, when load-shedding is most likely to interfere with a desktop terminal or an open position. If the local internet or power supply fails, it can disrupt MT4 or MT5 strategies. FP Markets, XM, VT Markets, and Pepperstone provide VPS hosting and built-in virtual hosting that you can access directly from the platform.

SARS Tax Treatment

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) levies taxes on profits from CFDs traded on the NASDAQ and requires you to declare whether these profits are taxable, regardless of whether the broker is based locally or offshore.

SARS treats these profits as revenue and taxes them at a rate ranging from 18% to 45%. CFDs do not have the Section 9C safe harbor provision, meaning this classification does not cover holding positions long-term. Keep complete records of foreign currency transactions and exchange rates, as amounts in foreign currency are converted into ZAR using the rates published by SARS. Seek advice from a qualified South African tax professional.

NASDAQ Trading Pain Points - Concerns and Solutions

  • Evening power or internet interruption - the US cash session overlaps the South African evening, so use might want a VPS or a backup connection
  • ZAR conversion costs - NASDAQ is USD-priced, so compare the conversion markup separately from the spread
  • Different broker symbols - US100, NAS100, US_TECH100 and US100_SPOT all reference the same index, so check the contract specification
  • US daylight-saving shifts - SAST stays at UTC+2 while US clocks change, so the market-open time moves in March and November
  • Confusing index and stock CFDs - NASDAQ 100 is a basket, and individual shares are separate CFDs with their own leverage

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming every broker that accepts South Africans is FSCA-regulated
  • Comparing Forex spreads instead of the actual NASDAQ 100 spread
  • Confusing NASDAQ 100 CFD trading with ownership of Nasdaq-listed shares
  • Ignoring overnight financing on positions held beyond one session
  • Forgetting that US daylight-saving changes shift the SAST trading window
  • Assuming the index leverage matches the Forex leverage on the same account

Bottom Line

For South African traders, the NASDAQ decision depends on three figures which vary from broker to broker: the index spread, the index leverage, and the overnight financing charge. These are generally different from a broker's Forex rates.

  • FP Markets has the smallest spread at 0.69
  • CFI links the index with SA40 at 1:500 and requires no minimum deposit
  • AvaTrade adds a fixed 1.50 markup and publishes a constant daily swap rate
  • Capital.com lists its financing rates in full
  • XM offers the index as both a cash and a futures contract, from $5
  • VT Markets offers a 0.90 spread with NDD and ECN execution
  • PU Prime charges no commission on the index and trades it 23 hours a day
  • Pepperstone provides a forward contract without overnight financing

Before you trade, check the symbol, and add the financing cost to the spread when you hold a position overnight. Confirm the index leverage rather than simply assuming that it will match the leverage ratio for your Forex account.
