This currency pair faces a higher realm and this is correlating with the broad Forex market as financial institutions and investors simply may find themselves at a juncture they do not know which direction to take next. Cautiousness has developed in global assets and this is being expressed in the USD/ZAR just like other major currency pairs as USD centric strength has taken hold. Large players influencing the USD/ZAR are likely wondering what will develop in the mid-term and as long as they are unsure, this sets the table for a tendency to lean into buying the USD/ZAR. However, things can change fast and intraday volatility remains a staple in the Forex diet.

Inflation Concerns Support Dollar Demand

Inflation concerns certainly persists not only among government central banks but in businesses too. This makes the short and near-term more open to consideration that the USD/ZAR may remain under the shadow of a U.S Federal Reserve that has to appear as if they are fighting higher costs with interest rate hikes – even if in reality the Fed doesn’t want to do this.

Meaning financial institutions remain worried that a more hawkish Fed - one that is considering raising interest rates higher - may stay in fashion longer than anticipated previously. Higher energy costs are making this concern legitimate. The USD/ZAR which had been enjoying a solid bearish trend suddenly has found itself in a stubborn upwards swing, one in which resistance levels are being challenged.

The Pair Holds Above Its Previous Range

The USD/ZAR finds itself near the 16.44200 mark as of this writing with fast action being demonstrated. The broad global markets – including stock markets – appear nervous as concerns appear ready to collide and potentially set off more cautiousness among large players. Higher U.S bond yields are causing financial institutions to worry and this is contaminating Forex conditions.

The USD/ZAR yesterday stayed below the 16.46000 level but did see many fluctuations via bids and asks that continued to traverse a tight rope at higher levels, this has continued into today. Late last week saw a lot of the higher marks also traversed, this after the price velocity higher that broke out last Wednesday and essentially left the 16.20000 to 16.30000 price range behind. Retail traders should watch technicals to see if sustained action develops above the 16.45000 to 16.46000 ratios, if this happens sooner rather than later, it may signal higher values will develop.

Risk Sentiment Shapes Near-Term Trading

Financial institutions are able to shift their sentiment quickly, but the higher elements of the USD/ZAR that have developed in the past handful of days is a stark visual that optimism may be disappearing about a quick resolve to the Middle East situation and the inflation it is causing. The broad Forex market is showing significant USD strength which may prove to be consistent until positive impetus somehow develops.

Traders who have been chasing lower momentum in the USD/ZAR because they have gotten used to the trend should consider the near-term will be a fight that finds these new higher realms tested. Meaning that there may be additional firepower upwards. While lower values remain in sight, behavioral sentiment appears fragile globally and this is impacting decisions.

The Prior Downtrend Remains Relevant

As always the global markets could get a sudden dose of sunshine. President Trump could announce a Middle East resolution. However, this appears unlikely. Yet, the trend lower in the USD/ZAR seen over the mid-term remains a strong instinct and some financial institutions may not be ready to completely disown the notion that the currency pair should be at lower values. Traders should not get overly ambitious about a chosen direction at this time and be satisfied with wagers that attack short and near-term perceptions.

A Volatile Range Keeps Both Views in Play

Near-term trading decisions should be done while monitoring the global markets and sentiment that is showing cracks in confidence. Energy costs remain problematic, but continue to fluctuate. This may make the USD/ZAR shake within its current higher realm and simply test notions being generated by influences from afar. A fight between the optimists and those who are cautious is likely to produce continued choppiness for the time being in the currency pair.

What to Watch Next

USDZAR is trading close to resistance around 16.44600, with nearby support around 16.42000. Sustained trading above the resistance area would keep attention on whether the pair can establish itself outside its earlier range. A return below support, however, would weaken the immediate upward pressure and refocus attention on the range that defined trading earlier in September.

Dollar demand, energy-market developments, and broader risk sentiment are likely to remain important inputs. The next sessions may show whether the current move is developing into a more durable shift or remains a volatile reaction to changing market caution.
